You Don’t Have to Know the Whole Plan Yet

“What comes next?” is a big question. On a hard day, it can feel so big that you would rather reorganize a kitchen drawer than try to answer it. I understand the appeal. Drawers, at least, have edges.

When life changes, we often want a complete plan before we take the first step. Where will I live? How will I earn enough? Who will be in my life? What if I choose wrong? Trying to solve all of that at once can keep you standing still.

I use a simpler sequence in my Making Room Framework™: Name It, Picture It, Honor It, Shape It, Step Into It. Name what has changed. Picture what you want your days to feel like. Honor what mattered in the life you have lived. Shape a practical next step. Then try that step and learn from it.

You can do this on a very small scale. If your home feels too quiet, perhaps the next step is inviting one person over, not deciding whether to move or find a housemate. If you are thinking about downsizing, perhaps the next step is visiting a neighborhood, not listing your house. If you want to return to work, perhaps the next step is telling someone about what you offer.

You can revise the plan as you learn. An experiment that teaches you what you do not want is still useful information.

I am living this in real time. I have ideas for my home, my work, and my future. I also have days when I can manage only the next task. So I choose a step I can take from where I am.

You do not need the whole map today. You need a place to put your feet and the freedom to take another step when you’re ready.
