Making Room for More Life at Home

I have been thinking about a scene that has nothing to do with decorating: people in a living room, laughing while they put ornaments on a Christmas tree. Someone makes a joke. Someone else goes to get another mug. The house feels lived in.

After Brad died, the quiet in our condo became one of the hardest things to get used to. I could turn on a show, keep lamps glowing, and fill my days with work. What I missed was the everyday sound of another person being there.

That made me ask what I want my home to make possible. I want a place where friends can come for dinner, where family can stay, where someone can sit beside me for a movie. It does not have to be perfect or large. It needs to feel welcoming and usable.

I have been clearing space and turning one room into a guest room. Those practical changes matter because they support the life I want. But the next part requires more than organizing. It requires invitations, plans, and the willingness to let people see my real life, even if I haven’t finished every project.

Maybe your version is different. Perhaps you want a quiet place to paint, a table where your grandchildren can make a mess, or a spare chair for a friend who drops by. Before buying another storage bin or rearranging a room, ask: Who and what am I making room for?

Then make one choice that welcomes that life. Clear the table and invite someone for soup. Put the art supplies where you can reach them. Make the guest bed. Start the tradition before the house is “done.”

I want more life in my home. I am learning that I can begin making space for it now.
